History

May Logan

The May Logan Healthy Living Centre is named after a former editor of the Bootle Times. She was a familiar face around the town and her legacy of child welfare and self-help can still be felt by families today.

Lillian May Logan was born on 1st May 1914. She was educated at Westminster School for Girls in Liverpool and later studied at the College of Commerce in Crosby.

During the war years, May served in the civil defence and rose to the rank of senior warden. As the war came to an end, May began her career in journalism and became well known for her Auntie Margaret's children's column.

In 1969, May took over as editor of the Bootle Times at a time when women were rarely offered such positions. She was also active as a magistrate and sat on various committees for charities. She was founder of the Bootle Carnival, which ran for twenty years after the war. Later on in her life she became chairman of the Bootle and Litherland Abbeyfield.

May received an MBE in the Jubilee year of 1977 for her services to the community. She died on 15 December 1995 and was laid to rest in Bootle cemetery.

Opening of the Centre

The Centre was opened by the sister of May Logan on the 27th September 1999.

In 2001 the centre was extended with a new cafe, creche and upstairs multi purpose room. This phase 11 building development was opened by Frank Ludlow, Chair of Sefton Health Authority on 26th November 2001.
